Maximizing Face Lift Results: What is “Contour-Lift”?

To maximize the results of a face lift, it is often necessary to refine the contours of the facial bones that support the soft tissues before pulling up the sagging skin and muscles.

In this post, I will explain the concept and direction of the “Contour-Lift”—a term I have coined—and share some actual clinical cases.

1. What is a “Contour-Lift”?

The term “Contour-Lift” is a name I’ve started using to describe a specific synergy. While I have previously presented the necessity and results of performing facial contouring and face lifts simultaneously at academic conferences, I didn’t use this specific name then.

However, for the best results, the “frame” (the bone structure) underneath the skin should be reshaped first. I have named the procedure that combines facial bone contouring with a face lift as the “Contour-Lift.” Simply put, it is a harmonious combination of these two surgeries.

2. Why Combine the Two?

If a face lift is performed on a face with prominent bone structures, the prominence can actually become more exaggerated. For example, after a lift, the face may appear wider or larger than before.

1. Prominent Cheekbones: Lifting tissue over wide cheekbones can make the mid-face look broader.

2. Prominent Jawbone: A heavy jawline can prevent a smooth, slim result.

By refining the bones first, we create an environment where the soft tissues can be lifted naturally and comfortably.

3. Surgical Direction

• Zygoma (Cheekbone) Reduction: During a face lift, fat layers move upward and outward. To prevent the face from looking flat or wide, we reduce the side cheekbones.

• V-Line/Jaw Surgery: Refinement of the jaw body is key to creating a sharp, youthful neckline.

• Genioplasty (Chin Advancement): For those with a recessed chin or double chin, advancing the chin tip clarifies the profile and improves the double chin area.
